The Stamper family purchased Wellington Farm in 1946 and it is now run by the third Generation of Stamper’s; Leigh and Hodgson. In 2003 Leigh and Hodgson took the decision to diversify the farm and acquired a new herd of Jersey Cows with plans to build a café and produce our very own Jersey Ice Cream. Then officially joined by their wives; Gill and Susan, our café project started.
The cafe opened in 2005 where we were now also joined by Hodgson & Susan’s Daughter Ashton and we began producing our now locally famous Jersey Ice Cream which was made with milk from our herd.
In May 2005 we were very proud to receive First Prize from a Made in Cumbria competition for our Whisky & Marmalade ice cream which won ‘Most Unusual Flavour. This continues to be one of our most popular flavours today!
Whilst we no longer have our own herd as the farm has continued to diversify, we still continue to make our Wellington Jersey Ice Cream which is still made using Jersey milk to our very own secret family recipe by Leigh Stamper and his niece Ashton.
After a refurbishment in 2013 we re-launched the cafe in April 2014, now also joined by Leigh and Gill’s daughter in law; Debbie.
We have also developed an event site at the farm which is multi-purpose; this has been used in the past for festivals such as CockRock as well as Northbound Festival in 2015 in partnership with CN Events, Allerdale B.C and GLL Leisure.
In 2016 we were very pleased to have been awarded the Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence award, which we have been once again awarded in 2017, 2018 & 2019.
The farm itself continues to grow and diversify, recently we installed a biomass system with MANCO energy which now supplies the heating for the cafe and the farm.
We are also pleased to welcome to the farm Parkers Riding School who have opened a purpose built arena as well as Derwent Air Rifle range both of which provide activities for the whole family to compliment what we provide in the cafe.
Our most recent project is 'Wellington Farm Glamping Breaks' which we are very excited about and have been working on behind the scene's for a while. We are very much looking forward to welcoming our first guests in late 2019/early 2020!
We look forward to welcoming you to our farm soon!
